Have you checked to see if your barber is on Instagram? Have you followed your trash company on Facebook? If not I am about to open your eyes to a whole new world of fun, entertainment, and helpful information. There are not many places in the USA where “Market Streets” can still compete with big box stores and 2-day shipping, but Frederick small businesses are world class – including their use of new media! Here are a few of my favorites just to start you down the rabbit hole.

Side Note: if you represent a small business, you get the added benefit of learning from folks who are doing it well – many despite difficult subject matter.

Facebook

The Frederick Scanner – Up to the minute updates on exactly what is causing that traffic jam, how a storm is shaping up, or a myriad of other local happenings. The best part is the crowdsourcing benefit of their 15k+ fans. The bigger their audience becomes, the faster and more detailed information they have to share. (Facebook.com/FredScanner)

American Disposal Systems – You’ve got to hand it to these folks; they have found a way to make literal TRASH entertaining. From schedule updates due to holidays or weather to contests and giveaways they do a great job of making their Facebook page a genuine asset to their customers, despite a less-than-glamorous topic. Instagram

Citizen Frederick – More that just men’s clothing and haircuts, this feed is brimming with “rustic, masculine style paired modern, urban sensibility”. Side effects of following them include increased haircuts and pride in Frederck. (@CitizenFrederick)

Silk & Burlap – They are taking window shopping on Patrick Street to a whole new level! Without ever leaving your couch you can browse trendy clothing and accessory combos and unique home décor to your hearts content!

Pinterest

The Crowley Company – “Local” company might be a stretch with their international reach but they are headquartered here in Frederick – and they are dominating on Pinterest! They find extremely creative and engaging ways to make their highly technical imaging technology very applicable, relatable, and fascinating. (Pinterest.com/CrowleyScans)

Twitter

Flying Dog – The perfect mix of humor, company news, retweets, and props to their brewing team. Flying Dog’s edgy brand and voice was practically made for Twitter and they are nailing it! (@FlyingDog)

The Frederick Keys – Root, root, root for the home team with live score updates during games. Plus you’ll stay in the know about fireworks nights, contests, giveaways, and theme nights. Don’t forget to #shakeyourkeys! (@FrederickKeys)

Look at it this way: Every hard earned dollar we spend is a vote for the person/company who we give it to. Let’s get to know them! Oh, and on a personal note, I hope you will take a minute to like Frederick Magazine (Facebook.com/FrederickMagazine”) and 270net (Facebook.com/270net) as well.
