Nixing Netflix

Image credit: Mashable.comHave you heard that Netflix is splitting in two?  Well, turns out they aren’t.  In September Netflix announced it would be re-branding its popular DVD-in-the-mail service as “Qwikster” and only offer streaming content under the Netflix name.  But due to overwhelming user backlash they’ve reversed course yet again and will not be splitting their services.  Glad that’s cleared up. Perhaps you’ve also heard they raised prices by up to 60%?  Yeah, that’s still true.

Now I’m a loyal consumer, but we all have our limits.  I’ve begun to weigh my options.  If you’re also thinking of jumping ship, consider these Netflix alternatives.

  • Hulu Plus
Hulu’s strength is the television programming it offers on-demand.  As far as movies go, Hulu Plus claims “hundreds of movies and documentaries.” This seems a bit limited, but the price tag is attractive.
    Cost: $8/month

  • Apple TV
Apple TV is a small, wireless box that brings movies, TV shows and other content directly to your HDTV.  You’ll also be able to watch the content on your iPad, iPod, iPhone or Mac via iTunes.  Streamed movies cost a “rental” fee on an individual basis.
Cost: $100 for the box, roughly $4 per movie streamed

  • Blockbuster
I recently cleaned out my wallet and tossed my old Blockbuster card without a second thought.  The brick-and-mortar Blockbuster stores around me have all closed their doors the last few years.  But the company has been purchased by Dish Network and opportunity may be knocking for Blockbuster once again. Not only are they ramping up their on-demand offerings, Blockbuster also offers DVD-by-mail services (which is what attracted me to Netflix in the first place).
Cost: $10 - $20/month for mail service, roughly $4 per movie streamed

I love the services Netflix offers.  But this is a competitive market now.  The three alternatives above are just a few of the competitors taking aim at the industry leader.  They’ve caught my attention.

Dumping Netflix?  Sticking with them?  Tell me why (and who you'll be using instead if applicable).
