Web Applications

What is a Web Application?

Most web pages are static - they contain information that doesn't change unless someone edits the web page.  But many web pages are dynamic - they change depending on the contents of an information source connected to the web page, or they change based on user interaction.  A web application is the underlying programming and data sources that allow a web page to be dynamic and interactive.

As an example, consider a website for a hotel.  The site could contain static pages on the hotel's location, rooms, amenities, and contact information.  Or it could go further and allow you to make reservations online and retrieve or cancel your reservations.  A web application makes this additional functionality possible.

So, in summary, a web application is programming and data connections that allow web pages to be interactive - to "do something."  The possibilities are endless.  If you can think of something you want your website (or intranet) to do, 270net can create a web application to make it happen.  Following are some examples of web applications that 270net has developed:

  • E-commerce systems with customer accounts, shopping carts, product management, and secure checkout and payment

  • Corporate Intranet - highly functional web-based corporate networks - project tracking, correspondence, document library, company news and events, and much more

  • Client management and work tracking system (we developed our own - it tracks everything we do and handles all of our client information, work planning, invoicing, payments, and client website maintenance - you can even see what we do for you!)

  • Community Portal (check out www.frederick.com)

  • Hotel reservation system with inventory management and reporting

  • Events calendar with online registration and payment

  • Broadcast email modules allowing you to communicate via email with your customers

  • Classified Ads

  • Latest News - website owners can update their news via a web interface from anywhere and it's reflected on the site immediately

  • Search Engine tracking - allows you to see at anytime where you stand on Google, Yahoo, etc.

  • Teacher's Notes for a school academy - teachers post them, and students and parents read them

  • Member directories for Chambers of Commerce and other member organizations

  • Menu systems for restaurants and catering companies - including coupons

  • Class lists and registration systems for a home school academy and health club

  • Real Property Management System

We could go on for a while with more examples, but you get the point.  A web application can be anything from a small form that a potential customer fills out to request information to a full-blown ecommerce solution, property management system, client management system, or corporate intranet.  270net Technologies can do it all.

Developing Web Applications

A quick word about developing web applications.  There is a right way to do it and a wrong way.  The right way involves scoping, planning, prototype development, quality assurance, integration and scalability, testing, and documentation.  The wrong way ignores much of this and you would be surprised how common it is.

270net uses Microsoft development tools, is a Microsoft Certified Partner, and has Microsoft Certified Professionals on staff.  Our programmers and designers are highly skilled and have years of experience.  We develop web applications the right way.

Web Application Modules

Depending on the size and complexity, development of web applications can be expensive.  Competent programming hours are not inexpensive.  Fortunately, 270net has developed some commonly used web applications, and made them available to our clients as "modules."  Think of it as renting instead of owning.  This makes a lot of sense for an organization looking for advanced web technology without having to suffer high development costs.

The 270net modules are sophisticated, robust, and time-tested.  They are continually improved and enhanced based on feedback from clients that use them.  Purchasing a module typically includes a small setup fee and a monthly charge.  Fees vary depending on the module, and whether we are including it in a 270net Web Package or adding it to an existing site.  Following are the currently available modules.

Some of these modules are discussed on our Website Packages page.
